How to Grow Herbs from Seeds?

With this guide, you will know which herbs you can grow from seed and the process in how to grow them successfully.

What herbs you can grow from seed

The first thing that you need to know is what seed you can successfully grow into herbs. Not all the herbs will grow successfully from seeds.

These are the best herbs to try if you are trying to grow herbs from seed for the first time.

  • Basil
  • Chives
  • Cilantro
  • Parsley
  • Oregano
  • Sage
  • Thyme

Prepare the seeds before planting

If you think that you can only plant the seeds in the ground, and you leave it till it became seedlings, then you are making a huge mistake. And, this might be the reason why you are struggling to grow herbs from seed.

The first thing that you need to do, is to prep the seeds before you plant them. You should put the seeds in water overnight. The seeds should be completely wet before you are planting them. This is the key to success. And a secret that not many know about. Especially, if you don’t have any knowledge about planting seeds.

Preparing the soil before planting as well

While you are waiting for the seeds to soak in the water, you can start prepping the soil as well. You should have a high-quality potting soil for herbs, and fertilizer added to the pot.

It is also recommended that you are wetting the pot with the soil. This is to make sure that the soil is fully drained and wet enough for planting the seed.

Many people are not making sure that the potting soil is completely wet before you can plant your seed. With soil that isn’t wet enough, you will not be able to grow your seeds successfully.

Covering the seed and pot with plastic

With the seed soaked and the soil prepped, you can now plant the seed. The seed should be three times as deep as the size of the seed. Really small seeds can just be placed on top of the soil, before wetting the soil again.

After you have planted the seed, you should make sure that you are wetting the soil again. But, not too much, because your soil was already been watered before. Cover the pot in plastic and punch a small hole in the plastic. The plastic is ensuring that the seed is staying warm and damp.

You can also place a plastic bottle upside down on the pot, to cover the seeds you just have planted. It does the same thing as with plastic. But, it is easier to keep the ground and seed moist with the plastic bottle.

Keep ground wet

The key to growing seed successfully. You should ensure that the ground is wet all the time. Not soaking wet, but wet enough to make sure that it is able to grow.

In other words, you should make sure that the soil is always moist on top of the pot. You should check the pot on a daily basis to ensure that it stays moist. Dry soil won’t let a seed grow into a seedling.

Repot when the seedlings are large enough

Normally, you would have planted more than one seed in one pot. And, as the seed is growing and getting larger, space might get too tight for the herbs to grow correctly. If this is the case, then it might be time for you to report the seedlings. They should be only one seedling in a small pot or two to three seedlings in bigger pots. Making room for them to grow.

You can grow herbs successfully from using seeds. Some of the herbs are growing better and easier than others. There are also some herbs that won’t grow from seed.

With this guide, you will know how to grow herbs from seeds correctly, and to have healthy, growing herbs that you can use all the time. It isn’t as hard as what you might think, and with the right method, the right potting soil, and the right type of fertilizer, you will be able to enjoy your herbs in no time.
