On Monday I picked 2kg of cherries off my neighbour’s cherry tree. And believe me, the tree is still dripping with fruit. I reckon, conservatively you could pick another 15kg from it easily. And there is another tree right next to it, equally full of fruit.
On Tuesday I popped into the shops, just to grab a loaf of bread. It’s not a classic anecdote admittedly, but when I was there I saw something rather shocking. There, nestled in the fruit section, were punnets of cherries. They looked nice and tasty, but then I noticed the price…
7.95chf for 400g!

For the Americans reading, that’s $8.25 for 14oz. For the Brits, that’s £6.40 for less cherries that would fill a pint glass…
So yeah, the fruit here is super expensive.
This year we are prepared that we won’t get much from the garden, but given its size, it is going to save us a lot in the long run. Heck, we don’t even have much planted and we’ve already saved almost 40chf!!
I’ve got the wife, who is also a spreadsheeting genius, on the case to create an Excel which will keep track of the savings we make. Once the formulas are finalised I will put it up on the blog for you all to download in case you’d like to use it too. But in the meantime, let me know how much your garden has saved you by leaving a comment below. I’d love to hear about your thrifty ways…
