My apartment block is like many in the area; homes from the first floor up, but retail space on the ground floor. And down there we’ve got a paint shop. Now I’m not too interested in paint, but I have been eyeing up their pallets for a long time. The shop is usually quite good at returning a reusing them, but I have, on occasion, seen the odd one thrown into the rubbish truck.
A few weeks ago (I’ll admit it, I was a little merry…), I summoned up the courage to liberate one of the pallets from the rubbish pile, and bring it upstairs to the flat. I imagined the police waking me up in the middle of the night, being dragged to the station to explain myself, hauled through court, jailed, extradition… I’m a worst-case scenario kinda gal. But that never happened, and the pallet remained on the balcony.
I didn’t know quite what I was going to do with it, but yesterday I decided to repurpose it into a trellis. Two of my tomato plants (a Supersweet 100 and a Giolice) had gone, well, batshit crazy, and I realised that they needed something a little bit more sturdy than your usual common or garden cane…
Using screw hooks, I attached a network of garden twine to the pallet, rested it up against a wall and put the tomatoes into the trough in front of it. I tied them on with more twine or tucked their leaves and branches under the criss-cross string.
It works fantastically, and as an afterthought, I’ve also added twine from the pallet to the drainpipe, which I firmly intend to grow courgettes up once they’ve grown on a little bit.
Anyway, that’s what I got up to in the garden yesterday, what did you do?
