GrowUp has a farm unlike any other in the UK. It is based on an industrial site just opposite London City Airport. Inside, racks of shelving and rows of fish tanks creates over 550m2 of growing space. They are able to produce, sustainably, 200000 bags of salad and 4000kg of fish, each year.
But, you know the old saying, things are always bigger in America. Well, Aerofarms, a US-based urban farming startup is about to embark on a project that which will be huge. Aerofarms are going to super-size the GrowUp method, but spreading it across a 6500m2 site. They’ll not only aim to produce fresh greens and veg on the outskirts of New York City, but they are also planning to open 25 more farms in the coming years, with 5 sites already in the works.
As exciting as these projects sound, I can’t help but think that it puts my rather paltry indoor grow space to shame!
