It is the time of the year when I start off my seedlings. Sure, I love planning what I’m going to grow, but realistically I know that fruit and veg are a long way off. Right now, I want something that is going to give me quick results to get me through the tail end of the winter, and that’s why I’m turning my hand to growing mushrooms.
I came across the Espresso Mushroom Company, via the Small Batch Coffee Company, and Brunch Box Brighton. Basically, the latter stocks the coffee of the middle company, whose used coffee is used as a growing medium for the former – hence Espresso Mushrooms… It’s a small outfit based in Brighton, England, and the grow mushrooms as a way of upcycling the coffee grounds and because, well, its probably super fun to boot.

Basically, you can pick two types of mushroom, which are then shipped to you in spore form, pre-mixed in coffee grounds and another growing medium. You submerge the pack in water, then remove the packet, pop it back in the box, and then leave the shrooms to grow.
Apparently, you can get up to three crops of, in my case hot pink oyster mushrooms, from each box. And sure, that’s not going to make them the cheapest mushrooms around, but sometimes it’s more about the adventure than the cost-effectiveness.
Anyway, the growing medium is currently soaking away, and in about 2-weeks I’ll have my first crop of mushrooms. Watch this space!
